![]() Many people have described this subject as 'identity management'. If we don't address these problems then people will lose confidence in digital channels.īut most of all we need to develop identity services around the needs of users – if we don't then people will not trust or use them. And we need better ways to protect people from transacting with fraudsters. When we disclose personal data we need to do it securely. We can transact anonymously in some contexts, but not all. But we need to address it if we are going to take advantage of digital channels. Identity assurance is a complex subject and a controversial one, not just in the UK. ![]() The Minister for the Cabinet Office, Francis Maude, explained to a packed Technology Strategy Board event why a federated identity assurance model is essential for the 'digital by default' initiative and how important this digital policy is, not just for public services but for the wider economy. Join Opinion on Facebook and follow updates on /roomfordebate.Monday was a big day for the Identity Assurance Programme. The American people need to understand the Cherokee Nation and what it truly is today: a complicated, welcoming nation that should have the right, like every other nation, to determine its own citizenship. Whatever the courts decide, I know the Cherokee Nation will abide by it.īut at the end of the day, people need to ask themselves a crucial question: “Who decides who is an Indian?” Does the United States government decide? Does misinformed public opinion decide? Or do Indians decide? And the issue itself is not one of race, but of how best to preserve Indian identity. After the federal hearing, again it will be up to the courts to make a decision. ![]() The courts made their decision, and we need to abide by what the tribal courts have ruled upon. Just a few weeks ago, the Cherokee Nation Supreme Court ruled that citizens of the Cherokee Nation had to have Indian blood, and that decision has eliminated about 2,800 non-Indian Freedman descendants from the Cherokee Nation. Tribal and federal courts have upheld our sovereign right to decide who is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation.Īs I continue to listen to issues on citizenship, again I’ve come to believe that the focus needs to be on Indian identity – as individuals, as a people – but most importantly the focus should be on facts, not emotion-grabbing headlines. Common heritage is an ancient way of understanding our shared bond, but we are ancient peoples and it is the only way that makes sense to us to safeguard our continued survival. For virtually every tribe in the country, that has meant having a by-blood requirement for citizenship, and our nation is no different. Today, our tribe is the safe haven for an endangered identity. Like that of many other Native American tribes, our history is filled with efforts to erase our identity and destroy our way of life. It is what makes the Cherokees an Indian nation. Indian ancestry is crucial to the preservation of our identity. My 5-year-old daughter is a Cherokee Nation citizen, too. In college, I was part of the Native American Students Association at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, the capital of the Cherokee Nation. Growing up in Vinita, Okla., I was part of an Indian community. I got my tribal citizenship card in 1993, but my friends and my community know I’m Cherokee, because I’ve spent my entire life as part of the community. The Cherokee Nation should have the right, like every other nation, to determine its own citizenship.
